If you want to connect with your own source of wisdom, power and peace, what you seek is only a meditation away. The term "meditation" can refer to any process that leads you to an inner state of relaxed awareness. There's really no right or wrong way of doing it. There are simply different techniques that can be used as tools to help you focus and quiet your mind. In this on-line course from Balance Yoga Studios owner & Change Agent, Melissa A. Grifftih, you will learn the basics of meditation and how to incorporate specific elements to make your practice uniquely enjoyable and fulfilling.

This course is an opportunity to begin a simple practice of self-awareness and centering. The main purpose of this course is to help you develop a meditation practice that's right for you. It'll be something you feel comfortable doing and that you're willing and able to do regularly. As you develop your own meditation program, you'll be able to track the benefits for yourself, from changes in your mood to improvements in your energy. Soon you will find yourself reacting from a place of centered calm rather than from your head. For those ready to begin meditating now, many of these benefits can be felt with the very first session, and continue evolving with regular practice.

Unleash the power of your mind

This four-week course contains transformational lessons every week that provide a glimpse into various meditation practices from around the world and through the ages. You will learn how your body can help you reach higher states of awareness, and unleash the power of your own mind to create the life you want. You will also have the opportunity to cultivate a sense of self-acceptance and self-love, and discover methods for reconnecting with nature as a meditative practice.

Reduce anxiety and stress

Once we develop a meditation routine, we come to depend on the way our practice enhances our lives. We discover an ever-present source of inner peace and wisdom from which we can now draw strength, courage, clarity and compassion. It becomes easier to respond to situations from a calm and grounded place, rather than acting out old dysfunctional patterns. We're also better able to navigate our lives in alignment with our own needs and goals. By giving ourselves the space to simply be ourselves, many of the distractions from other people's agendas melt away.

Meditation also becomes an important way to take really good care of ourselves. Research has linked a regular practice of meditation to reduced levels of anxiety and stress, in addition to improved immune function and a host of other health benefits. Studies have shown that the nervous system actually begins responding differently to stressful situations--creativity flows more freely and new solutions begin to emerge.

Meditating enables us to become aware of how active our minds can be, and also what kinds of thoughts we're engaging in on a regular basis. The more we meditate, the easier it becomes for us to gain leverage on our minds in order to still them. From here we can begin choosing positive, helpful thoughts from a place of increased awareness. This is one of the main reasons that meditation is such a powerful and beneficial habit to get into. It helps us gain control over our own lives and consciously direct our attention, intentions, and experiences.

The point of meditation is to keep the mind free of confusion. Meditation, past calming our nerves, past being good for our blood pressure, past allowing us to work out our own internal psychological dramas, which it does, past helping us to get along with our kin and our community, is a way of really deeply seeing the truth that the only way to ameliorate our own suffering and the suffering of the world is to keep our minds clear. — Sylvia Boorstein
